A little off topic here, but kind of related to our post about starting a supplements business, I thought I would post this extract from Wikipedia about setting prices, as it seems to resemble the pricing structure in the supplements industry…

A Technical Look at Pricing, Resembling the Supplements Industry

“According to neoclassical price-determination theory and game theory, the independence of suppliers forces prices to their minimum, increasing efficiency and decreasing the price determining ability of each individual firm. However, if firms collude to increase prices loss of sales is minimized as consumers lack alternative choices at lower prices. This benefits the colluding firms at the cost of efficiency to society.

One variation of this traditional theory is the theory of kinked demand. Firms face a kinked demand curve if, when one firm decreases its price, other firms will follow suit in order to maintain sales, and when one firm increases its price, its rivals are unlikely to follow, as they would lose the sales’ gains that they would otherwise get by holding prices at the previous level. Kinked demand potentially fosters supra-competitive prices because any one firm would receive a reduced benefit from cutting price, as opposed to the benefits accruing under neoclassical theory and certain game theoretic models such as Bertrand competition.”

Profit Margins for new Supplements Sites

That’s right, you start a supplements business, set your prices, feel upset at the low profit margins, then see other sites selling cheaper. You reduce your prices, virtually eliminating profit to match other sites, then you see other sites selling cheaper still. To match their prices you would make a loss. The only way you can increase your profit margins is to increase sales volumes to get better prices from the manufacturers, but that is never going to happen when other more popular sites are cheaper. Like in my other article about starting a supplements business, I’m not saying it’s impossible, but you need to be realistic about your expectations.

Over time, the industry is becoming ever more saturated and since the recession, profit margins are getting squeezed from every angle in terms of shipping, VAT, merchant fees, packaging, etc. and it would be a massive task for anyone to start from scratch and compete with the biggest sites.

I’m not trying to falsely put people off launching their own site here, I’m simply trying to help like minded people. We receive 2-3 emails per week from individuals replying to our other post (link above) saying they have “a plan”, are extremely dedicated, know SEO, etc. and ask various questions, stating that they are going to go for it no matter what, all believing they will succeed. At least they take our comments on board and consider things they may not have even know existed.

The Supplements Layer Cake

The supplements industry resembles the analogy made to the drug suppliers in the film Layer Cake in that there are higher and higher levels of companies, from the biggest US Manufacturers down through major importers, smaller importers, supplements companies, smaller supplements companies, supplements shops and finally dropshippers. They all want a slice of the profits, with the biggest profits at the top of the cake… collusion springs to mind! We are at a good place in the Supplements Layer Cake, somewhere in the middle and we therefore welcome newcomers to the industry, as after making initial contact, some of them go on to order their supplements from us, or even dropship through us… “It doesn’t mattter. It’s all profit” – Ray Liotta, Goodfellas.

Regards,

Based upon our research, tests, tasting and reviews, combined with customer feedback and industry knowledge regarding sales volumes, here is a list of our opinion of the best protein shakes available in the UK in 2011:

AST VP2 – 100% whey isolate, mixes easily, tastes great, over 90% protein, zero lactose and used daily by several of the staff at Promart Supplements. Unbiased university double blind studies undertaken in the USA show that supplementing with VP2, compared to a standard protein shake results in significant additional increases in muscle mass and strength compared to a standard protein shake. I agree with the findings.

Allmax Isoflex – a blend of whey isolate and hydrolysed whey isolate make this protein powder our most successful new product of 2011. It tastes great, is very high in BCAAs, lactose free, mixes easily and is a real contender for the top spot.

CNP Pro Peptide – By now I’m presuming everyone knows the benefits of Pro Peptide, but for people who don’t, Pro-Peptide is a fast and slow digesting blend of micellar casein, whey concentrate, egg albumen, etc. which means that it helps your body maintain a positive nitrogen balance, meaning that your body stays in an anabolic muscle building state for much longer between meals, compared with standard whey protein. Pro peptide is therefore a great protein shake to drink before bed and also between meals.

USN Pure Protein IGF-1 – An extremely popular premium protein blend manufactured by USN, originally from South Africa. Pure Protein IGF-1 consists of a precise mixture of whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, calcium caseinate, egg albumen and soy protein isolate supplying your muscles with everything they need for growth. Pure protein tastes great and mixes well

Massive Nutrition Colossal Whey – This is another new product, from a new manufacturer, which offers a lower priced whey protein concentrate / isolate blend at low cost. Colossal Whey is low in carbs and fats, mixes really easily and tastes very nice. This product is formulated for maximum bio-availability and ease of digestion and has received some very good feedback from our customers.

We only stock the best brands of supplements in the world, which is why all of the top 5 protein shakes above are available from our store with free next day delivery.

ON 100% Whey doesn’t make the top 5 list because despite it being a good protein powder, it is over priced, with better products costing less. You should know that a lot of the big companies around the world who supply supplements have affiliations with the brands they promote as being the best, where they either own the brands or get discounted wholesale prices on them for promoting them. For example, Monster Supplements own PhD, who win all of their supplements awards. Anyway, the point we are trying to make is that our top 5 list above is based on our own opinions only and is there to help our customers make the right choice.

Regards,

For anyone interested in making their own supplements, here is a brief description of how whey protein isolate is manufactured.

Fresh milk is pasteurized

The casein (curd) and a some of the milk fats are separated out to make cheese

The remaining whey in liquid form, goes through a series of filtering processes to separate the lactose (a type of sugar found in milk) from the whey protein

The liquid whey is then placed in an ion exchange tower to concentrate and purify the whey protein, without denaturing the whey protein

The water is then removed from the whey protein in a drying tower to create a powder.

The whey protein isolate powder is then put into tubs with labels for sale.

You can make your own home made liquid whey protein from milk, by simply leaving some milk for 3-4 days in a glass bottle at room temperature. The liquid whey then rises to the top above the curds and can be separated by pouring over a strainer lined with a cheesecloth and collecting in a bowl beneath. Leave it overnight, until the dripping stops, then put in a clean glass jar and place in the fridge and it will be good for 6 months (supposedly). The liquid whey will still contain some lactose, but would that be a bad thing if used as a post workout shake? By the way, it is probably cheaper to buy a standard whey protein concentrate powder, than to try and make your own liquid whey, if comparing the cost per gram of protein.

CNP Pro Mass Overview

Benefits of CNP Pro Mass

CNP Pro Mass is the perfect weight gain formula for anyone requiring additional calories in their diet. CNP Pro Mass isn’t just about calories though, the calories are all from high quality macronutrients, i.e. CNP’s advanced, time released protein blend, low GI carbohydrates and a small amount of good fats. This combination makes CNP Pro Mass one of the most popular supplements in the weight gainer category.

Taste: Very good taste, nice flavour and texture. Can be used 2-3 times a day for weeks without getting fed up of it.
Cost: Prices vary, but at the time of writing this article, our prices, including delivery are £19.24, £29.24 and £47.24 for 908g, 2.5Kg and 4.5Kg respectively. Other reputable sites may charge £1-3 less, but at checkout add £5.99 for delivery.
Quality: Pro Mass is top quality, there’s no doubting that. However, we wondered whether the carbohydrates should come from a very low GI source such as barley like with Reflex products, but Glycemic Load is more of an issue than Glycemic Index and as such, the difference in Glycemic Load from one serving of Pro Mass if compared to a new Pro Mass, using barley, the most noticeable difference would be the cost. Also, maltodextrin is much more easily digested than lower GI sources and so it can be argued that using a lower GI carbohydrate source reduces the overall quality of the product, whilst increasing the price tag.
Digestibility: No issues reported. CNP products tend to sit well with most people, as long as you aren’t combining them with Nitric Oxide boosters, as excessive arginine can give some people the runs.

CNP Pro Mass Further Information

As shown in the table, you can get twice as many servings if you mix with milk and the nutritional side is not much different. The main differences are that you will be consuming much more sugar, due to the lactose content of milk and getting half as much fibre. Is it an issue? Not really… if you are following a mass gain program and training hard, I doubt you will notice a difference. The main thing is that your Pro Mass will last you longer.

CNP Pro Mass Ingredients and Descriptions

Straight from the CNP website, here are the main ingredients, along with descriptions:

Maltodextrin – An easily digestible form of carbohydrate made from natural corn starch. Maltodextrin is the preferred carbohydrate used in energy foods due to its solubility, low taste profile, and quick absorption. Maltodextrin is the primary source of complex carbohydrates.

Fibre – A carbohydrate made up from the indigestible parts of plants, which passes through our digestive system relatively unchanged. There are two types of fibre: soluble and insoluble and both will slow down the absorption of carbohydrates and proteins.

Whey Protein High Fraction Concentrate – an undenatured fast released protein containing higher levels of growth factors than normal whey protein concentrates.

Micellar Casein – This is the only form of Casein (and costs three times the price of whey) proven to be anti-catabolic. This is because of its undenatured properties and slow release into the blood stream enabling amino acids to be on hand for the muscle to repair and grow. The blend of proteins in Pro Mass is very important, the combination of whey (Fast acting) and Micellar Casein (Slow acting) allows a steady stream of amino acids (complete protein) into the blood stream for repair and growth.

Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) – Medium chain triglycerides are a shorter chain than the long chain triglycerides and are fats (9 calories per gram) that are easier to digest than other fats.

CNP Pro Mass Conclusion

If you want to gain lean muscular weight quickly, whilst following a high intensity weight training program, CNP Pro Mass is the perfect product. Consuming six high protein meals per day is made much easier when you can simply drink a tasty milkshake for three of your six meals. Also, people who struggle to gain weight, will find it much easier when using Pro Mass. It is a great product, from a very well known, long established and reputable manufacturer. However, if you want something a little bit more potent, check out our Allmax Quickmass Review.

Cytosport are a popular supplements brand, who were established in 1998 by Greg Pickett and his son Mike. Cytosport are huge, especially in America, where they have a 14,000m2 manufacturing facility. To visualise the size of their factory, it is roughly the same area as two Wembley football pitches!

The benefits of these huge brands are that they control the manufacturing process in-house from start to finish, so they know exactly what is in their products. They are also amongst the market leaders when it comes to pioneering new processes for the production of the best supplements, as they re-invest their profits into research. Smaller companies who outsource production have no control over quality and have to settle for what is available.

Cytosport Muscle Milk

Cytosport provide a large range of products, and Muscle Milk is possibly the most popular, closely followed by Monster Milk and Cytogainer. Cytosport Muscle Milk is the perfect shake for before, during and after high intensity anaerobic exercise such as bodybuilding. Here is the nutritional information, along with additional statistics regarding other attributes of this product.

Where is it all going to end with these increasingly excessive weight gainers? Probably with diabetes, but that’s just my opinion. Anyway, this new product claims the following. Each 635g serving provides:

2600 Calories (or 5000 calories mixed in whole milk)

184g Protein

391g Carbs

46g MCTs

0g fat

Each 635g serving should be mixed in a gallon (eight pints) of whole milk! How ridiculous! See Bodybuilding.com for full label information.

I was about to start complaining about this product, but it appears that the label claims are there to get people to look at the product (like I did). Upon closer inspection, the directions are to spread each serving over 1 to 4 days, taking regular sips throughout the day. So, each serving will only be a fraction of the label claims in reality. Still, I would expect huge sales of this product in the same way that Mammoth 2500 became so popular a few years ago.

We don’t sell this product and we aren’t going to either so I’m not going to spend too much time reviewing it. I just get the impression that with this product it is all about the label and trying to make it sound good. The actual quality of ingredients and therefore quality of product remains to be seen.

Weight Gainers Tips

There are always lots of people wanting a miracle cure to gain weight quickly, when I say weight, I mean muscle, just muscle and no fat. This is an unrealistic aim. Your best bet would be to take a look at the Top 50 Bodybuilding Tips and try and change your whole lifestyle. Sustained and progressive muscle growth will follow.

What is Testosterone?

Chemical Structure of Testosterone

Testosterone is a steroid hormone mainly secreted by the testes in males and the ovaries in females. It is also secreted by the adrenal glands. Testosterone is an anabolic steroid, which means it increase protein synthesis, which results in the building of muscle mass. Men produce approximately ten times more testosterone than women and it is responsible for characteristics such as increased muscle mass, body hair, good health, etc. Women, although they produce much less testosterone than men, are much more sensitive to the hormone.

Testosterone is an androgen, from the same group as Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), Androstenedione, Androstenediol, Androsterone and Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and is anabolic in that it promotes muscular growth, or growth of tissues with androgen receptors. Increased muscle size, strength and power are associated with higher testosterone levels.

Sleep & Testosterone

The following lifestyle and diet points can all affect testosterone:

Sleep – Lack of sleep can affect your testosterone levels in a negative way, making them drop by as much as a third

Diet – Zinc increases testosterone levels and Vitamin B6 and magnesium improve absorption of zinc. <ins>Testosterone is derived from cholesterol</ins> and a diet high in these vitamins and minerals also increases the conversion of free cholesterol to testosterone.

Sex Life – Abstaining lowers your testosterone levels, so aim for at least once per week!

Alcohol – drinking really messes up your testosterone levels and can reduce them by anything up to 50%

So, if you are an alcoholic with a poor diet, who gets no sex and suffers from insomnia, then you have problems.

To naturally boost your testosterone levels:

Testosterone Boosting Workout

Address the above points

Lift heavy weights on exercises such as Leg Press, Deadlifts, Squats, Pullups and Presses, with maximum intensity for 6-8 smooth reps per set, with constant tension, no locking out, near full range of motion, for 45-50 minutes, 3 times per week, no more. Note: more results in overtraining and cortisol production (stress hormone), which will negatively effect your testosterone boosting and/or muscle building efforts.

Reducing your body fat percentage has a positive effect upon test levels. Check out our sustained weight loss article for more tips.

Further diet tips to be included in your typical daily diet:

Broccoli and Testosterone

Fat – good fats, in moderation, are required in order for your body to produce testosterone, with monounsaturated fat, found in nuts, being the best type.

Vegetables – Broccoli and cauliflower have long been known to increase testosterone, but recent research also shows these vegetables can actually <ins>reduce estrogen at the same time as raising testosterone</ins>.

Carbohydrates – a high carb diet, high in simple sugars and starches, especially the high GI carbs, elevate insulin and cortisol levels which reduce testosterone production. Eat low GI carbs, such as wholewheat pasta, multigrain bread, brown rice, plus green vegetables and salad, to avoid this negative effect. Also note that eating little and often, i.e. 6 small meals per day, is the best way forward.

Protein – little research has been made into the effects of a high protein diet on testosterone, but from the research that has been done, it appears that total testosterone or total T levels are reduced for people on a high protein diet compared with a high carb diet. However, the bioactive testosterone or bioactive T, which is what really counts is higher for people on a higher protein diet.

Garlic – has been shown to increase testosterone levels, whilst reducing cortisol levels.

Other Foods – Oysters, Asparagus, Figs, Eggs, Basil, Nuts, Brown Rice, Cheese, Turkey, Liver, Avocado, Bananas, Celery, Pine Nuts, Salmon, Tuna increase testosterone, libido and sex drive.

Stress – being under a lot of stress plays havoc with your hormones and results in increased release of adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol. These hormones negatively affect testosterone levels and have catabolic effects on the body, i.e. make you lose muscle mass. Avoiding stressful life situations is therefore very important for your testosterone levels. Whenever the Football World Cup is on, you will hear reports on the news about how being a big football fan of a losing team can significantly reduce testosterone levels, whereas following a winning team can have positive effects.

Increase Your Testosterone Using Supplements

The following supplements increase testosterone production and/or support higher testosterone levels:

Tribulus Terrestris

Stimulates testosterone production in the testes by increasing the Leutenizing Hormone levels

ZMA

Zinc, Magnesium and Vitamin B6 in the right doses, taken daily has been shown to elevate natural testosterone levels

Multivitamins

Crucial for maximum levels of testosterone, if diet is lacking in nutrients. Supplementing with a multivitamin, even for people with a good varied diet, tends to be beneficial in terms of testosterone absorption.

Essential Fatty Acids

It can be difficult to consume the right amounts of the right types of fatty acids through the day, every day and so supplementing can be beneficial for testosterone production.

What are the benefits of supplementing a normal diet with extra protein, compared to following a high protein normal food diet?

<g:plusone href="http://www.promartsupplements.co.uk/blog/normal-food-vs-protein-supplements-for-bodybuilding/"></g:plusone>

Okay, so you are getting into bodybuilding and want to gain as much muscle as you can, as quick as possible, right? That means that you need to eat 6 or more high protein meals per day, which is a big task for anyone. You can use meal replacement powders such as CNP Pro MR, Nutrabolics Fighters Food, or Dymatize Elite for up to three of your daily meals, but what about the rest?

Nutritional Requirements For Muscular Growth

First of all, you should work out your daily nutritional requirements, using our macronutrient calculator. If you eat six meals per day, divide the totals by six and you have your nutritional requirements per meal. Assuming you use three meal replacements per day, then for your other three meals, you could easily reach your requirements by topping up your protein consumption by supplementing these meals with a whey protein shake.

Bodybuilders’ Typical Daily Diet Using Protein Supplements

If you use lots of protein supplements, your diet would look like this:

7am: Porridge + Whey Protein Shake

9:30am: Meal Replacement, banana, apple

12pm: Salad Sandwich in Wholemeal Bread + Whey Protein Shake

2:30pm: Meal Replacement, banana

5:30pm: Evening Meal + Whey Protein Shake

8pm: Meal Replacement + Wholemeal Toast with Peanut Butter

Bodybuilders’ Typical Daily Diet Without Supplements

If you don’t want to use supplements, then here are some easy meal options which are high protein and suitable for bodybuilding:

7am:

Boiled or Scrambled Eggs on Wholemeal Toast1

Porridge + Semi Skimmed Milk

9:30am: Packet of Noodles, 600ml of semi skimmed milk

12pm:

Tuna, Chicken, Turkey, Beef, Extra Lean Corned Beef or Ham salad sandwich in wholemeal bread

Jacket Potato with Cheese & Beans, Cottage Cheese or Tuna

2:30pm: Same as 12pm

5:30pm: Evening Meal2

8pm: 600ml of semi skimmed milk + wholemeal toast with peanut butter3

Notes:
1 Egg yolks and egg whites contain similar amounts of protein, but the yolks contain most of the fat, with the whites being virtually fat free. Depending upon your nutritional requirements, you could therefore either have 8 egg whites, 4 whole eggs or a combination. By the way, cooked eggs are nearly twice as absorbable as raw eggs, so make sure you cook them for best results and also to avoid salmonella. Similar to the eggs, consume as much or as little toast as required to meet your nutritional requirements.
2 Your evening meal should contain a good source of protein, such as fish, poultry, lean meat, etc. If it doesn’t, then drink 600ml of semi skimmed milk with your meal (roughly 1 pint), for an additional 20g of protein.
3 milk contains micellar casein which is a slow digesting protein and combining this with low GI slow digesting food like peanut butter on toast helps keep your muscles fed with amino acids for longer dduring the night, avoiding muscle loss while you sleep.

Normal Food vs Protein Supplements – Conclusion

To meet your nutritional requirements supplements aren’t required. Regular food provides everything you need. However, your diet will include less protein, but much more sugars and fats, compared with a diet that includes protein supplements. For example, a pint of milk provides roughly 270 calories, 19g of protein, 28g of sugar and 9g of fat. Comparing that to 1 scoop of whey protein in 200ml of water, which provides 100 calories, 23g protein, 2g sugar and 0g fat, you can immediately see the difference. The main effects upon your progression as a bodybuilder if you don’t use protein supplements are as follows:

Less anabolic environment for gaining muscle, due to lesser, lower quality protein intake, so results will be slower and limited

More likely to hold body fat, unless additional cardio is performed, 3-4 days per week

My Advice

My advice… at least get some whey protein, it works out at around £0.35 per serving, so is cheaper than any regular food per gram of protein, whilst being made from milk. If you don’t like the idea of using supplements, then don’t worry about whey protein, it is basically skimmed milk, but without the sugar or micellar casein (other form of protein in milk).

I have eczema. It can be bad sometimes. However, if I follow a bodybuilding programme, it goes completely, without using any creams or anything. Does this work for you too?

<g:plusone href="http://www.promartsupplements.co.uk/blog/does-bodybuilding-help-eczemadermatitis/"></g:plusone>

Since being about 4 years old I have suffered from eczema. Skin contact with fruit juices, high pollen counts, being too hot, etc. can all be triggering factors for the itching. Until I was about 17, the only guaranteed way to help my eczema was going abroad on holiday. Whether it was the changed diet, with more fresh food, salads, olive oil, etc. or the sun, sea and sand, I don’t know, but every time I went abroad, my eczema vanished completely. However, now I am 29, I know another guaranteed way of controlling my eczema.

Bodybuilding Lifestyle

I have always been good at sports, with a very good natural physique. I have also always had an interest in bodybuilding, owning my own weights bench and dumbbells from my early teens. At 17 or 18, I started going to the gym 3 days per week, every week. I never do anything by halves, I take everything to extremes and when I started training three times per week, I was training balls to the wall ultra high intensity. I used perfect form and slow rep cadence, which is a killer in terms of lactic acid build up on some supersets, especially for the quads. Training in this fashion results in massive muscular gains in minimum time if you follow a very good diet, to avoid overtraining your body. My constant diet reminder was my constant aching muscles, which, along with my dedication to the sport of bodybuilding, resulted in very, very good progress, with both muscle size and strength increases noticeable on a weekly basis.

My Typical Daily Diet

My typical daily diet when training is high protein, low sugar, low in bad fats, low GI and high in vitamins, minerals and good fats.

Breakfast: scrambled eggs / egg whites on wholemeal toast

Mid Morning Snack: CNP Pro MR meal replacement drink

Lunch: Tuna salad sandwich in wholemeal bread, pint of semi skimmed milk

Mid Afternoon Snack: CNP Pro MR meal replacement drink

Evening Meal: Chicken, salad, jacket potato, cottage cheese

Mid Morning Snack: CNP Pro MR meal replacement drink

I would also add a palm full of pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds and also include a spoon full of flax seed oil in my meal replacement drinks.

Noticeably Improved Eczema in Weeks

Within weeks of following this challenging training programme and diet regime, my eczema, which was quite bad at the time, cleared up completely. I slept better every night and felt better through the day. Over the past 12 years or so, for various reasons, I have had to stop training 3-4 times for a couple of months. Every time I stopped training, I struggled to keep to my clean diet and for some reason my eczema came back. I haven’t been to the gym for about 6 months now and my eczema is the worst it has been for a long time. In my head, I am thinking, oh well, I’m starting back at the gym next week and it’ll go straight away. I also thought it would be a good idea to pass this information on to anyone else out there who suffers from eczema/dermititis, so that they can give bodybuilding a try too.

Conclusion

In my personal opinion, I think that the main factors associated with bodybuilding below, help eczema in a big way:

drinking more water results in better hydrated skin

higher amounts of protein, vitamins, minerals and good fats from the meal replacement shakes and the seeds increase overall health and optimise bodily functions

different hormone levels in the body resulting from the weight lifting sessions

better sleep

Bearing in mind that the only common denomator between holidays to the med and bodybuilding, with regards their positive effects on my eczema is the better diet, which is high in fresh fruit, vegetables and good fats and being more active. I am therefore wondering if simply consuming three servings of CNP Pro MR per day and exercising three times per week would reduce eczema for everyone? Please let me know how you get on by leaving your comments below.

Disclaimer: as this article is based upon personal experiences, I have not looked at any other articles (if they exist) on this subject as I wanted to explain everything exactly as I know it. Whether this would work for anyone else remains to be seen, but you should note that before you start any new exercise or diet programme, you should always consult your GP beforehand.
