How Does Creatine Allow You To Gain More Muscle Mass?

What is Creatine?

Creatine or methyl guanidine-acetic acid (its chemical name!) is an amino acid which is created naturally by the body and is the primary nutrient used by muscles in the human body to perform high intensity exercise. The largest amounts of creatine (around 95%) are found in the skeletal muscle system, with the remaining 5% being in the heart, brain and testes. Our bodies acquire the majority of our creatine stores through our diet. A balanced diet which includes meats, dairy products, fish, egg whites, nuts and seeds will give an average active person enough creatine to exercise. However to perform to a higher level, or if the activity is particularly demanding (e.g. weight training) it is difficult to consume enough of these foods to fulfil the bodies creatine requirement. In such cases a supplement would be recommended.

How does Creatine work on the body?

The main function of creatine is in the production of energy. The extra energy provided can be used to carry out additional work and thereby stimulate muscle growth. An elevated level of creatine in muscle tissue also leads to the retention of water in each cell, which in turn promotes protein synthesis and ultimately increased muscle mass when coupled with training. You will be able to lift slightly more weight for slightly more reps within a couple of days, which will result in muscle mass gains (assuming you are consuming a calorific surplus, including sufficient protein in your diet, spread out throughout the day and drink lots of water).

Should I use a Creatine Supplement?

If you are looking to improve your power and increase muscle size then a creatine supplement should come in useful. Most people taking part in power based sports will report greater gains in muscle mass and strength when using creatine.
